This short
essay now appears at the website of Hachette Books, the
publisher of my volume on Easter titled He is Risen: Reflections on the Forty Days of Lent (see main my web page for more information, including synopsis, excerpt, and reviews). “It is purpose that created us. . . . That guides us. That drives us. It is purpose that defines us.” — Agent Smith, The
Matrix Reloaded
Twenty-five years ago, I was a singer/dancer on Broadway in New York. I thought at the time that I'd been put on planet earth to do one thing—be as successful as possible. My goals were limited and specific: work hard, earn good money, make influential contacts in The Biz, land a few movie roles, and win at least one major entertainment award (Grammy, Tony, Golden Globe—any of them would have been fine). In other words, achieve the ultimate in happiness and fulfillment. And so the story would have played out had it not been for God, who grabbed hold of me at a young age and said, “Hang on, boy. I have other plans for you.” I ended up leaving show business after God opened my eyes to the fact that there was a lot more to life than just being happy; more to life than simply entertaining people as a route to the best things this world could offer. There were issues of eternal importance with which the Lord wanted me to become deeply involved. Much to my surprise, I started pursuing a career as a Christian author—even though I'd never before written anything more complicated than a high school essay. But by his grace and mercy, God made it apparent that I'd been blessed with an untapped gift. He soon began to open doors of opportunity, gave me divine favor in the eyes of key individuals within the publishing industry, then enabled me to pen some very important works in the fields of Christian doctrine, church history, the Bible, and various other issues: fantasy literature, pop culture, video games, and religion in general. Now, my whole reason for existing is clear: I’m here to know, love, and serve God—wherever I go, whatever I do. Sometimes, the only thing I can say in response to my journey so far is: “All things are indeed possible with God.” |
